Sand Casting vs Shell Moulding — What's the Difference?

Both start with a mould, but they're built differently.

Sand casting

uses loose, compacted sand around a pattern. It's cost-effective and works well for larger or lower-volume parts.

Shell moulding

Die casting

uses a thin, resin-bonded sand shell formed around a heated pattern. It holds tighter tolerances and gives a smoother finish, which suits parts with fine detail.

What is the difference between sand casting and shell moulding?

Sand casting uses a loose sand mould. Shell moulding uses a thin resin-bonded sand shell, which gives tighter tolerances and a better surface finish.

SG (spheroidal graphite) iron is stronger and more ductile than standard cast iron. It's widely used in automotive and hydraulic components.

CI, SG Iron, Aluminium, Steel and Brass can all be sand cast. Each suits different strength and weight needs.

Resin-coated sand is shaped around a heated pattern to form a rigid shell. This shell is then used to cast the final part.

SG iron has graphite in a spherical form, which gives it more strength and flexibility. Standard CI has graphite in flake form, which makes it more brittle.
