Pattern making is the process of creating a replica of the component you want to cast. This replica, called a pattern, is used to form the cavity in the sand or mould where molten metal is poured. Get the pattern right, and the casting comes out right too.
The main materials are wood, aluminium, gun metal or cast iron, and thermocol (EPS). Wood suits prototypes and short runs, aluminium suits production volumes, gun metal and cast iron suit high-repetition tooling, and thermocol is used for single-use Lost Foam Casting patterns.
