What are MGB housings made from?

These are cast in aluminium or SG iron, depending on what the application calls for. Aluminium keeps weight down where that matters most, while SG iron steps in when a part needs extra toughness. Either way, the material choice comes down to what the housing will actually face once it's in service.

Casting lets you get closer to the final shape before machining even starts, which cuts down on wasted material and machining time on complex geometries like gearbox housings. It's not about cutting corners — it's about building the part's core strength into the casting itself, then refining it with precision machining afterward.

Nothing skips inspection. Parts are checked dimensionally, scanned via CT or X-ray to catch anything hidden inside the metal, and put through metallurgical testing to confirm the material itself is sound. Surface finish gets a separate look too, since flight components can't afford surprises.

It runs in five stages — pattern making, moulding, casting, machining, and inspection. Each one feeds into the next, and nothing moves forward until it's been verified. That's how consistency gets held across a batch of ten parts or a batch of a thousand.

Both work. The pattern-making and casting process is flexible enough to handle a handful of prototype units or a full production order, without changing how carefully each part gets built and inspected.
